Arik Armstead

This would be unlikely, but if the Chiefs wanted to make a huge splash in free agency they could sign Arik Armstead of the San Francisco 49ers to the defensive line. Armstead has been in the NFL for five seasons and has started 43 games and played in 62. This most recent year was by far his best, as he started every game and finished the season with 10 sacks and 54 tackles.

Armstead would be one of the Chiefs’ most expensive options. Spotrac currently sets his market value as $15.6 million. While he would be a great addition to the defensive line, this price tag might be out of the Chiefs’ price range. However, if the Chiefs really wanted to pursue Armstead, they could work out a deal.

Paired up opposite Frank Clark, the Chiefs would certainly have one of the best defensive lines in the league if they signed Armstead. If they managed to keep defensive tackle Chris Jones as well, they might have the best line in the league.

Jabaal Sheard

A cheaper option the Chiefs could pursue is Indianapolis Colts defensive end Jabaal Sheard. Sheard is a veteran who has been in the league for nine years. He’s been consistent throughout his career, and would likely sign a cheap deal with the Chiefs for the chance to compete for a title.

This season, Sheard started 12 games and played in 13 and finished the season with 4.5 sacks and 25 tackles. Along with defensive end, Sheard has played various positions on the defensive line as well as linebacker. He’s a versatile player who, if the Chiefs needed, could move around on defense.

Sheard would be a good fit economically for the Chiefs, as they might be able to use the money saved by signing him to resign Chris Jones to a long-term deal. However, whether the Chiefs choose to move forward with Jones or not, Sheard would nice addition on a cheap deal.
