The Kansas City Chiefs have welcomed back a familiar face into the fold at wide receiver for 2020 with the re-signing of Gehrig Dieter.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a number of decisions to make at wide receiver this offseason, which might help explain why the team decided to bring back a familiar face into the fold at the position with the re-signing of veteran Gehrig Dieter.

Dieter, who will turn 27 years old later this month, first joined the Chiefs back in 2017 when John Dorsey was still general manager. He was an undrafted free agent addition out of the University of Alabama who became close friends with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Dieter spent his rookie season on the Chiefs practice squad.

Over the last two seasons, Dieter has played in 6 total games for the Chiefs as he’s also endured a bit of a roller coaster ride with the franchise. For example, in 2019 alone, Dieter was placed on injured reserve at the end of training camp and then released with an injury settlement one week later. Then he was re-signed to the practice squad in mid-October, made the active roster in mid-November, then was waived and placed back on the P.S. in December.

Dieter’s role for the Chiefs has been as a special teams player in the rare playing time he’s earned on the field. In 2018 he caught his only official NFL pass, a single 22-yard completion from Mahomes. He’s played a total of 63 snaps in his NFL career.
