History is against the Kansas City Chiefs building a dynasty

Dreams of a Dynasty

We all want the Kansas City Chiefs to build a dynasty. We’d all love to see them reel off five Super Bowl wins over the next ten years. The problem is that history says that its a really hard thing to do. Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Russell Wilson, and Ben Roethlisberger have combined to win just six Super Bowls in 63 combined seasons for the Packers, Saints, Colts, Seahawks, and Steelers. Expecting the Chiefs to win a bunch of Super Bowls in the next decade is asking for a lot.

Could the Chiefs do it? Anything is possible, especially with Patrick Mahomes as their quarterback, but in order to buck history and pull it off they are going to have to avoid the same pitfalls that other successful teams with Hall of Fame caliber quarterbacks have suffered.

First, they must keep the rest of the roster well stocked with talent. Patrick Mahomes is the best player in the NFL. Period. Aaron Rodgers was the best player in the NFL. Period. It didn’t lead to any more Super Bowl wins after that first one. Patrick Mahomes will be in the Hall of Fame some day with some of the biggest stats the league has seen. The same can be said for Peyton Manning and Drew Brees and they only won one Super Bowl each for Indy and New Orleans.

If the Chiefs are going to, in fact, build a dynasty there isn’t a man more important than Brett Veach. If he’s going to sign Patrick Mahomes to a long-term deal and keep the defense Super Bowl caliber and keep the offense stocked with enough weapons for Mahomes to succeed, he is going to have to be on his game. He has to sign the right guys at the right price and he has to draft really well. Draft picks are cheap and are key to building a complete roster while paying big stars the money you have to in order to keep them. He also can’t afford to give huge contracts to guys that don’t live up to their price tag.

The coaching staff is also a huge part of the equation. Andy Reid is a Hall of Fame coach and his staff has been first rate. They have an outstanding relationship with the players and if the dynasty is going to happen, not only does Reid need to keep the ball rolling for the next few years, but Clark Hunt and Veach are going to have to successfully transition to the next coach after Reid eventually retires. Hand in hand with the coaching staff is the overall chemistry of the locker room. That has been fantastic in recent years and if the Chiefs do want to build a dynasty they need to keep that tight-knit locker room intact as well.

Finally, the Chiefs are going to need some luck. For example, who knows if we’re even having this conversation if Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Miami Dolphins don’t upset the Patriots in Foxboro in week 17? Who knows how things would have turned out if KC didn’t earn a bye this year. They also need to stay healthy. They need to not have a bad break in a key playoff game. Nothing is for sure in the NFL. Chiefs fans should appreciate this Super Bowl win. There is no guarantee that K.C. will be back here again soon. We all hope it will happen. We all believe in this team, especially with Patrick Mahomes at the helm. Fans just need to remember how tough multiple Super Bowl wins are, even with an all time great at quarterback.

The coming months will be important for this team. What will Mahomes new contract be like and how will it effect the salary cap going forward? Will Chris Jones still be with the Chiefs next season? How will Brett Veach reload this roster for next season? Who will they target in the draft? There are a lot of decisions coming up that will have a big effect on if the Chiefs will be able to get back to the promised land again any time soon.

So what do you think Chiefs fans? Do you believe this team can become a dynasty? Do the other teams that have had star quarterbacks and failed to win multiple Super Bowls give you second thoughts? Do you think the Chiefs can avoid some of those same pitfalls? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.
