The Kansas City Chiefs did it! They overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win Super Bowl 54 over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday evening. This was the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl victory in 50 years. With a superstar at quarterback in Patrick Mahomes and an offensive genius as head coach in Andy Reid, are the Chiefs about to become the next dynasty in the AFC?

On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former Chiefs offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, discuss if the Chiefs are poised to be the next dynasty in football or if we need to pump the breaks for a few seconds and just celebrate them winning the Super Bowl first (12:55)?

“Look, it’s hard,” said Verderame. “People see these talented teams and just automatically assume, ‘Oh, they’re just going to get right back here next year.’ Injuries happen, contracts happen. Dee Ford lining up offsides happens. People will say, ‘well, that’s a fluke.’ Well, that’s the point of how hard it is…You just don’t get it that easily.”

“I think it’s naïve to just assume a dynasty is going to happen, right?” said Schwartz. “So look, they’re going to pay Pat Mahomes. Are you going to pay Chris Jones, too? You going to play Chris Jones and Frank Clark top-money?… There’s just not a lot of money to go around.”

Over the last 20 years, there has been one dynasty in the NFL and that has been the New England Patriots. They are the last team to repeat as Super Bowl champions and that happened 15 years ago back in 2003 and 2004. Kansas City is in a terrific position to win a bunch of games next year, but coining them as the next dynasty in football is a bit of a stretch. Let’s let things play out first.

If we see the Chiefs repeat as Super Bowl champions down in Tampa, clobbering the NFC Champion in the process, then we can have a serious discussion about this. The Chiefs are on top of the NFL world now. They have the right quarterback and head coach to win multiple Super Bowls, but let’s take this one season at a time for now. Football is so hard and so unforgiving.

Here are a few other topics discussed on this week’s episode of Stacking the Box:

  • Verderame talks about his SB experience (0:20)
  • Schwartz reacts to Chiefs’ win (4:37)
  • What does the win mean for Mahomes? (10:14)
  • Will Mahomes win 3+ Super Bowls? (17:19)

All this and more!
