The Kansas City Chiefs are leaving LeSean McCoy and Andrew Wylie inactive as they face the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made their roster choices and the final list of inactive players looks both familiar yet surprising in some respects. Both running back LeSean McCoy and offensive lineman Andrew Wylie are two players who were leads at their respective positions even until midseason, but are now standing on the sidelines as healthy scratches

These inactives show just how deep the Chiefs really are across the roster at nearly every position. Right now the Chiefs are potentially healthier than they’ve been all season long, and McCoy and Wylie have been inactive this postseason already, so in some ways the moves are not surprising. Still it is the biggest game of the year and to want to have all hands on deck might lead some to presume that at least one of those players would be active.

For McCoy, the year began as the Chiefs most productive running back in the season’s first half as Damien Williams struggled with consistency and injuries. Even as Williams took over, however, it’s still a bit of a shock to see McCoy not playing in the wake of season-ending injuries to Darrel Williams and Spencer Ware. Even rookie back Darwin Thompson is active.

As for Wylie, he’s proven as an effective starter for the Chiefs in the past but lost his job in recent weeks to veteran free agent signing Stefen Wisniewski, who actually has Super Bowl experience just two years ago with the Philadelphia Eagles. Wylie has also started at right guard, however, which makes him a versatile piece. Again, it’s just a bit of a surprise that he’s not in there. Then again, he might not be the same after some recent injuries suffered this year.
