The Kansas City Chiefs have added punter Jack Fox to the team’s practice squad, per reporter Aaron Wilson.

On Tuesday, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson had the word that the Baltimore Ravens had worked out a pair of former members of the Kansas City Chiefs in punter Jack Fox and returner/wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas. The Chiefs then acted quickly to bring Fox back onto the roster by placing him on the practice squad.

Dustin Colquitt is the Chiefs’ punter and has been cemented in that position since he was the team’s third round pick back in the 2005 NFL Draft, a tremendous run of success with the team. He’s also the longest-tenured Chiefs player by a longshot on this year’s roster. Moving forward, however, general manager Brett Veach has made it clear that he likes Fox and this current move brings up more questions about Colquitt’s future with the team.

Fox was brought in this offseason as competition for Colquitt, the first offseason ever that the Chiefs kept two punters on the 90-man expanded offseason rosters. Fox was let go before roster cuts were due and Colquitt went on to win the job just like he does every year. Yet now that the Ravens were sniffing around Fox as a potential addition, the Chiefs decided to act quickly and bring him back onto the practice squad.

Of course, placing someone on the P.S. is hardly going to save them for later since any team can sign any player from any team’s squad and place them on their active roster without providing any compensation. However, if the Ravens were also toying around with a potential future addition, the Chiefs signing Fox to the practice squad could have kept them from doing the same. And no team is likely to stash a punter on the active roster for the sake of a future asset.

Further questions will come about Colquitt’s job security at some point. For now, the Chiefs seem happy with both their two-time Pro Bowl veteran and the potential of Fox.
