The Penalties

The Kansas City Chiefs are proving themselves to be one of the most sloppy and least disciplined teams in the entire NFL when it comes to penalties. It’s absurd. It’s maddening. It’s inexcusable. Look, I get that the officiating has not been great and certainly there have been some penalties that the Chiefs didn’t deserve, but the vast majority of the penalties fall on the team’s horrible execution.

The Chiefs have been flagged 67 times in their first six games. That’s just over 11 penalties per game. Because of offsetting or declined penalties they have only had 48 of them enforced against them, but those 48 penalties have still resulted in 455 lost yards. That’s an average of 75.8 yards lost per game. It’s just absolutely out of hand.

There is no excuse for that many penalties. None. The players should be ashamed of how sloppy they are playing. The coaches should be equally or even more ashamed than the players.

I don’t want to talk about this any more. My blood pressure goes up with just the thought of a penalty at this point. Championship caliber teams don’t beat themselves. That starts with being mentally focused and disciplined and not beating yourself with penalties. If the Chiefs want to get back to being a Super Bowl contender this is where I would start.

Next up, let’s talk special teams.
