THE MVP
When it comes down to it, no other position is more important or impactful on the game of football than quarterback. It’s true if you have a bad one, a mediocre one or a good one. Fortunately for the Chiefs, they have the best one in the business.
Patrick Mahomes is the reigning National Football League MVP. He is firmly entrenched in the conversation for a second consecutive award. So far this season, Mahomes has completed 64 percent of his passes for a league leading 2,104 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and a single interception. He’s dominated in spite of major injuries (damn!) that have removed his blindside protection and top receiver. There’s also that lingering sore ankle (damn!).
The Chiefs have the best player of his kind at the biggest position. What hasn’t been said is that the impact is even greater in the playoffs.
When all is said and done, the Chiefs are going to be playing some games late in the season with a lot more at stake than mid-season home games against AFC South opponents. They might even be playoff games against AFC South opponents. Who knows? (No one because the season’s story arc is long.) The important point is that there’s something more focused, more heightened, more dialed-in when it comes to the playoffs.
That means the Chiefs have the single biggest asset in the NFL on their side when it matters most. That’s a major boost.
