If you’re worried about the sore ankle of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, he stood in front of reporters on Wednesday and said not to be.

You could almost hear the collective gasp at Arrowhead Stadium when Patrick Mahomes came up limping on Sunday night. Under the bright lights of primetime television, the Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback found himself on the receiving end of a mistake by Cam Erving—namely that he had stepped on Mahomes sore ankle. In that instance, Mahomes could be seen clearly limping toward the sidelines.

Ever since Mahomes entered the league, he’s helped to create a feeling of near invincibility around the team. If they don’t score four touchdowns, somehow there’s a problem. If they don’t win each and every game, something is wrong. If Mahomes doesn’t put up MVP-like numbers in every game, there’s a major concern. On Sunday, all of that felt fragile for the first time.

Mahomes first hurt his ankle in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. It was the first week we’d see a taped-up version of Mahomes but it wouldn’t be the last. On occasion, Mahomes has come up limping ever so slightly or favoring an ankle that’s clearly tender, and it’s led to some questions about whether it’s an ongoing issue if/when he misses an open receiver downfield.

In Week 5 against the Colts, the ankle and the opposing game plan both worked to stop the Chiefs offensive dominance. The end result was the team’s first loss of the season. With Mahomes hurt, even slightly, it’s clear the team’s edge had disappeared. Suddenly things seemed vulnerable again.

Fortunately Chiefs fans can take comfort that Mahomes is saying all the right things to reporters for now. He spoke on Wednesday and addressed questions about his ankle among other topics.

“I feel pretty good today,” he said. “It was sore after the game, but it’s feeling pretty good today, so I’m glad to be able to go out there and practice on it and get it moving around and stuff like that. I feel like I’ll be fine playing and moving and still doing what I need to do to win … It’s not perfect. I guess you could say that. But it’s good enough that I can still run, cut off of it and do all that kind of stuff.”

Here’s hoping Mahomes and the Chiefs offense can get back on track against the Texans in Week 6.
