One year after winning the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award, Patrick Mahomes is well on his way to capturing another such trophy in 2019.

The National Football League has announced its winners for the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Month for September for each conference. With the first four weeks of the season in the books, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has won the first quarter lap of the season.

On Thursday, Mahomes was named the winner in September and it’s a nice start for a player who won the ultimate award last year in the form of the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

Through four games, Mahomes has his team sitting pretty in the AFC West with a two-game lead over the rest of the division. The Chiefs are 4-0, only one of two such teams with the record (the other being, of course, the New England Patriots).

Despite playing on a sore ankle for the first couple of games and playing without his top wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, for the entirety of the season thus far (not to mention losing his blindside protector in Eric Fisher), Mahomes leads the NFL in touchdown passes (10), passing yards (1,510), yards/attempt (9.7), and passer rating (120.4). Mahomes has thrown 0 interceptions and is evading sacks at a league-leading rate (1.9) despite offensive line issues along the interior and a back-up left tackle playing the last few games.

Mahomes kicks off his next month of statistical output on Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts, his first primetime game in 2019 on Sunday Night Football.
