Minkah Fitzpatrick trade rumors: Chiefs, Cowboys mentioned among suitors
By Matt Conner
The Chiefs and Cowboys are among the teams rumored to be interested in trading for Miami Dolphins defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick.
The Miami Dolphins aren’t even being bashful about tanking anymore just two games into the 2019 regular season, and the drain on significant talent continues with news that defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick is the next player out the door.
Fitzpatrick was reportedly granted the right to seek a trade away from the team last week, and the latest news from Armando Salguero states that three mystery teams are in on a trade for the former first round pick. Given that Fitzpatrick is a solid on-field talent and was just taken in the first round last season, it stands to reason that any of the teams involved would be forced to give up a first round pick in return to Miami.
The Kansas City Chiefs were a decent guess at one of the three teams involved, but Salguero’s report never named a single franchise by name. Yet by Monday night, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports had a list of rumored suitors of his own and the Chiefs were indeed on the list.
On the surface, the secondary looked better in Week 2 than in Week 1 and the Chiefs also get Morris Claiborne back from suspension starting in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts. If the veterans continue to come together, the Chiefs might be comfortable with a primary quartet of Claiborne, Kendall Fuller, Bashaud Breeland and second-year corner Charvarius Ward.
Then again, even if the Chiefs felt good, or at least better, about their cornerback situation in the present, it’s important to note that only Ward is under contract beyond this season, with all three vets set to walk at year’s end. Adding Fitzpatrick would not only bring in a first round talent, but he would also be on the rookie wage scale, which means the Chiefs would control a top-tier pass defender through the 2022 season for very little percentage of the salary cap.
Salguero mentions being surprised if Fitzpatrick suits up for the Dolphins in Week 3 when they face the Dallas Cowboys, and La Canfora’s tweet states a deal should be done by Tuesday. This will be quick for all teams involved and Fitzpatrick sounds like he’ll have a new home sooner than later.
