Kansas City Chiefs trade targets: 6 cornerbacks worth considering
With the current offensive landscape in the NFL, cornerbacks come at a premium. Who are the top targets to improve the Chiefs depth chart at the position?
For many years now the Chiefs depth chart has been stocked with journeyman and underachievers at the cornerback position. From Marcus Cooper to Terrance Mitchell, there is no shortage of practice squad cornerbacks who have made the Chiefs roster and shined for a time only to be exposed in the most serious of ways. It’s been a problem that both John Dorsey and Brett Veach have struggled to solve.
It seemed like the tide might be turning when the team drafted Marcus Peters, a troubled but talented player out of the University of Washington. While he struggled emotionally in college, Peters looked to reign all of that in his rookie season with the team. All he did was go on to tie the Chiefs record of interceptions in a season with eight, adding 26 passes defensed and two touchdowns to go with his gaudy return numbers.
Unfortunately, this presumed match made in heaven between an Andy Reid led team and players with somewhat erratic personalities didn’t end as well as everyone hoped. For various reasons, some obvious and public and others not so obvious and internal, the team decided to move on from Peters. He was traded for a second round pick, leaving the Chiefs depth chart without a clear number one corner.
Since then, the front office has brought in a number of players but none seem to fill the void. The latest two are Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland, who both perform admirably but leave something to be desired. This brings me to the crux of the issue.
This season for the Chiefs is Super Bowl or bust. There’s really nobody that can or should disagree with that. This offense isn’t just great, it is historically great. Our quarterback isn’t just the MVP of 2018, he might be the best player in the entire league. Plus, he’s cheap. That won’t last long. We can’t afford to waste any more years of his rookie contract.
With the rapidly progressing landscape of offenses in the NFL, namely the Patriots and the Rams, the Chiefs depth chart is going to need an upgrade. Luckily, there are six targets the team can take a look at before the deadline to help their struggling secondary.
