Six practice squad prospects the Chiefs should steal
By Matt Conner
Maurice Canady, cornerback
Canady was a sixth round choice out of Virginia for the Baltimore Ravens back in 2016, but injuries have stolen most of his time in the NFL—including his entire rookie season. Canady will bring those health concerns with him anywhere he goes moving forward, but when healthy, the former Cavalier brings a nice skill set to the table.
Canady has played in 19 games over the last three seasons and comes with special teams experience as well as some actual NFL reps, so bringing a player like him is not like bringing in an untested rookie. Just like other teams on this list (Dallas, for instance), the Ravens just happen to be among the deepest in the league at cornerback (their secondary in general is quite impressive, especially after stealing, er, signing Earl Thomas). That leaves a player like Canady dangling on the practice squad.
Canady has impressive size (6’1, 195) and would fit right in as a Reaser type. Canady doesn’t necessarily solve the top-end talent problem, but the team wouldn’t look so thin on the depth chart, and Canady might also benefit from a change in scenery to put his injury frustrations behind him. He was a four-year starter in the ACC who could get his hands on the ball (26 batted passes, 5 interceptions) and Ravens’ fans have long been waiting to see what he can grow into. The Chiefs could give him that chance.
