Will LeSean McCoy find himself reunited with his former head coach Andy Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs? The rumors seem to believe so.
The Buffalo Bills surprised some with one of the biggest roster cuts of the weekend on Saturday with the news that veteran running back LeSean McCoy had been set free. As a veteran of four years or more in the National Football League, McCoy is now free to sign with whatever team he would like rather than sit through the waiver process.
McCoy was immediately linked, upon his release, to the Kansas City Chiefs, due to the presence of head coach Andy Reid on the sidelines. McCoy spent his early years with the Philadelphia Eagles where Reid was his coach.
McCoy spent his first six seasons in Philly, four of them with Reid, before heading to Buffalo in 2015. Since his rookie season, McCoy has averaged 1,060 yards rushing per season over the last 10 years, an incredible record of consistent production. In addition, McCoy has also averaged 47 catches per season in that time for 461 receiving yards per year. McCoy has 84 total touchdowns to his credit.
Some rumors floated insist that the Chiefs have inquired about McCoy in the eleventh hour in a possible trade. If there’s any truth to that, then it’s more than just conjecture about linking McCoy and Reid in a matchup. Then again, there’s a lot to wonder about where on the roster McCoy would fit.
The Chiefs already have Damien Williams as their lead back and Darwin Thompson as their newest rookie addition who looked good in the preseason. Carlos Hyde and Darrel Williams are also on the roster, not to mention the overall amount of pass catchers hungry for touches from Patrick Mahomes.
There’s also a question of just how much does McCoy have left in the tank? Last season, McCoy set a career low of 3.2 yards/carry and at the age of 31, that’s a difficult trend to reverse. Then again, the offensive line in Buffalo was atrocious in 2018 and it’s hard to compare schemes between the Bills and Chiefs.
Still that hasn’t kept people from connecting the dots. Check out the sampling:
It will be interesting to see where McCoy lands. If it’s in Kansas City, the offensive fit could only enhance what was already the league’s most dangerous unit.
