Wide Receivers

On The Active Roster: Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson, Byron Pringle, De’Anthony Thomas

Practice Squad: Cody Thompson

IR: Gehrig Dieter, Marcus Kemp

Cut: Rashard Davis, Jamal Custis, Felton Davis, Jody Fortson

This was going to potentially be the hardest roster cut down to figure out on the entire team before injuries took Marcus Kemp and Gehrig Dieter out of the equation. It’s not impossible that Dieter could be healthy enough to play this season but its hard for me to imagine them giving a roster spot to him over other guys who have worked all camp long.

I think Pringle edges out the rookie Cody Thompson because of a year’s extra experience plus some special teams upside. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Chiefs kept seven wideouts and Thompson made the last spot. Besides some good preseason production, the other thing he has going for him is his size. With Kemp out, K.C. doesn’t have a lot of size at receiver.

Kemp was also a standout special teams player and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that shortly after he was ruled out for the season they brought De’Anthony Thomas back. I think Thomas makes the team as one of Dave Toub’s guys. He plays special teams coverage units and can be another return man option, which could come in handy since I don’t have Tremon Smith making the roster.

I simply didn’t see enough from the other four wideouts to justify them making the 53 man roster. Rashard Davis was probably the best of the group. I wouldn’t be shocked if he was offered a spot on the practice squad.
