Kansas City Chiefs 53-man roster projection leaves Carlos Hyde out
Quarterbacks
On The Active Roster: Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne
Practice Squad: Kyle Shurmur
Cut: Chase Litton
This one seems pretty cut and dry to me. Everyone on the planet knows that Patrick Mahomes is the starter. Chad Henne’s role as the primary backup and veteran presence on the sideline and in meeting rooms is also a lock. Last season the Chiefs just kept those two on the active roster and I believe that will be the play again this year.
While I thought Chase Litton looked better in the first two preseason games, the Chiefs have consistently played undrafted rookie Kyle Shurmur ahead of him in the preseason. Shurmur did look much better than Litton on Saturday against the 49ers and it seems clear at this point that the Chiefs are committed to giving him a chance. Look for Shurmur to land on the practice squad and be given a chance to continue to develop under Andy Reid.
We could debate Shurmur versus Litton more, but ultimately if things go as expected it shouldn’t matter who the practice squad quarterback is. If Mahomes stays healthy, the Chiefs have their quarterback spot taken care of for the next decade. The rest is simply who fills out the roster.
