Safety

On The Active Roster: Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill, Daniel Sorensen, Armani Watts, Jordan Lucas

Practice Squad: none

Cut: Harold Jones-Quartey, Andrew Soroh

You can go ahead and write Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill, and Daniel Sorensen’s names on the roster in sharpie because they aren’t going anywhere. On the other end of the spectrum, Harold Jones-Quartey and Andrew Soroh have no shot at the active roster. It’s possible one of them lands on the practice squad, but that’s it. So the question at safety is if they keep Armani Watts, Jordan Lucas, or both.

Currently, I have both Watts and Lucas making the roster. They can both contribute on special teams and with K.C.’s issues at cornerback, it’s not out of the question that guys like Mathieu and Thornhill could play more of a nickel corner at times if needed. If that happens, it will be good to have plenty of depth behind them to man the traditional safety spots.

The Chiefs may be more improved at safety than any other spot on the roster this season. Sorensen and Lucas were clearly the two best safeties that K.C. had last season and that’s simply not the case this year. The additions of Mathieu and Thornhill and return of Watts from injury has made this a position of strength for the Chiefs and that definitely wasn’t the case last year.
