Several Kansas City Chiefs wasted an opportunity against the Steelers

Tremon Smith, Running Back?
The Kansas City Chiefs decided early in training camp this year that Tremon Smith wasn’t going to cut it as a cornerback in the NFL. The Chiefs top kick returner a year ago has speed and some elusiveness so they decided to give him a shot at running back. The problem is that he either hasn’t picked it up fast enough to even get on the field late in preseason games or the Chiefs simply aren’t that interested in seeing what he has to offer. Either way, it’s not a good sign for Smith.
Through two preseason games Smith only has three offensive touches and those were all last week (and only went for a total of five yards). If the Chiefs aren’t going to even give him a chance to make plays with the third string in preseason games then he will have to show that he is simply too good of a return man to let go. Unfortunately for Smith, that hasn’t happened in the preseason games either. He has one punt return for 4 yards and two kick returns that have averaged 21 yards.
It’s not that Smith has looked bad returning kicks; it’s just that he hasn’t stood out. If that’s literally all you have to offer then you need to look better than the other guys and he simply hasn’t. Smith needs to take advantage of every opportunity he has the rest of the preseason or he’ll be looking for a job in two weeks.
