The Miami Dolphins have signed veteran linebacker and special teams performer Terrance Smith, who spent the last few years in K.C.

Terrance Smith has been a fixture on the Kansas City Chiefs special teams units for the last three seasons as a surprise performer who continued to make the active roster despite facing considerable competition. Now he’ll take what he’s learned from his three years in K.C. to the Miami Dolphins, who announced a new deal with the linebacker on Sunday.

Smith entered the National Football League with the Chiefs in 2016 as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State. Not only did he sign with the Chiefs but he earned a practice squad spot once the season began until November when he made the active roster. He wouldn’t let go of that roster spot until two years later.

In three seasons with the Chiefs, Smith played in 31 games for a defense that had troubles finding quality play at linebacker. Smith even started three total games in that stretch and finished his stint with the Chiefs with 30 tackles on defense, 1 sack, and 1 interception.

Smith’s tenure with the Chiefs ended with injury, a torn ACL last fall that forced him to injured reserve.

Healthy once again, Smith is now looking to extend his career with a new team in Miami. The team placed defensive end Jonathan Woodward on injured reserve to make room for Smith on the roster.

Smith, who is now 26 years old, faces longer odds to make the active roster like any late addition to training camp for most teams, but his chances will largely extend to his ability to return to full strength after such a devastating injury.
