The Kansas City Chiefs have added another defensive lineman to the mix of competition in training camp in Hunter Dimick.

It’s a move that slipped entirely under the radar of anyone before Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star saw it on the Kansas City Chiefs training camp roster. Somewhere, at some time, the Chiefs recently signed defensive end Hunter Dimick and brought him to St. Joseph to compete at perhaps the deepest spot on the team.

Dimick is now with his third NFL team after enjoying on-again/off-again relationships with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2017-18 and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019. The Bucs signed Dimick to a futures deal in January but released him on NFL Draft weekend.

Dimick posted very impressive numbers for Utah in his college days. During his final season with the Utes in 2016, he had 14.5 sacks (third in the Pac-12) and 20 tackles for loss.

Unfortunately for Dimick, he’s going to face extremely long odds to make it to the end of training camp. Dimick is likely a short-term addition due to the recent injuries the team has faced along the defensive front. Frank Clark continues to rest a sore wrist. Alex Okafor has a hip injury, and Emmanuel Ogbah has an oblique strain. That’s three of the team’s newest front line imports sitting for multiple days.

Bringing in someone like Dimick allows the Chiefs to keep tabs on a young player they like enough to vet while also giving them a motivated camp body to help fill out the depth chart with so many guys missing.

For Dimick’s sake, he’s got a real chance in the short-term to turn heads like any NFL hopeful would want. For the Chiefs’ sake, here’s hoping Clark and company can return soon and continue to ready the defensive transition for the regular season.
