The NFL has finally spoken and unveiled all 100 players on its annual best of list and Patrick Mahomes comes in at No. 4.
The National Football League has completed the slow unveiling of its annual Top 100 player rankings and the 2019 edition has included a total of six members of the Kansas City Chiefs. Just as predicted, the man who sits higher than all of them is starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
It’s easy to expect Mahomes to land up top above his teammates given that he led them to the AFC Championship game (and an oh-so-close Super Bowl opportunity) while simultaneously winning the league’s Most Valuable Player award. What was not expected, however, was the fact that he’d be sitting behind three other NFL players despite being named the most valuable of all.
The NFL rankings are supposed to be a year-to-year deal, a reflection based on how players performed during the previous season. Winning the MVP award insinuates that Mahomes was the best overall player, but the NFL countdown reveals that he wasn’t even the best quarterback, per his peers.
The NFL list begins with Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald, continues with New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and even goes to Chicago Bears pass rusher Khalil Mack before landing on Mahomes at No. 4.
In the end it doesn’t matter. It’s not as if Mahomes need further bragging rights in a league that’s already hoisting him as high as they can—including the cover of this year’s Madden entry. Still it’d be nice to see Mahomes as No. 1 overall.
Despite the season he had, Mahomes still has a few doubters, fans and analysts who want to see him put up another season like he had before they crown him quarterback king.
