The Kansas City Chiefs waived tight end Neal Sterling and placed linebacker Darius Harris on the non-football injury list.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a couple of minor moves on Wednesday to clear some roster room as the team gears up for training camp and veterans arrive to practice alongside the rookies.

First, the Chiefs have released tight end Neal Sterling only several weeks after bringing him onto the active roster to compete for a spot behind starter Travis Kelce. The competition there should be wide open, but Sterling was unable to stand out in his brief time on the team.

Sterling was in his second stint with the Chiefs in his career—the first being a short three-week window in which he spent time on the team’s practice squad in 2017. However the Jets signed him away and that was the end of his tenure.

Overall, Sterling, who is now 27, has been a journeyman trying to find a long-term home with the Jaguars, Jets and Chiefs. Last year, he had 6 catches for 47 yards in five games for the Jets.

In other roster news, the Chiefs placed linebacker Darius Harris on the team’s non-football injury—a sister list to the Physically Unable to Perform list but designated for conditions that were not related to football. Harris had surgery on his right shoulder and wasn’t expected to be ready at this point.

The Chiefs like what they see, however, from the rookie free agent out of Middle Tennessee State and the NFI list allows him to return and practice immediately when ready.
