2. Wide Receivers (second string)

While we now know that the Chiefs will be able to start camp with both starting wideouts Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins available, the rest of the wide receiver depth chart behind them is pretty much up for grabs. Considering that the Chiefs are a team built around the passing attack of coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the fact that so many receiver spots are up for grabs is pretty remarkable.

Unlike a few other spots on this list the wide receiver competition is full of guys that have some promise. The top of the list of guys fighting for both playing time and a roster spot include Demarcus Robinson, second round pick Mecole Hardman, Gehrig Dieter, and Byron Pringle. However, don’t count out other young guys like Cody Thompson or Jamal Custis or even a special teams standout like Marcus Kemp.

The fact that so many young guys are going to be hungry to prove that they should be one of Patrick Mahomes targets going forward should make this a fantastic battle to watch play out in camp. Robinson has the experience advantage with the most NFL playing time and receptions under his belt.

Hardman was their first draft pick of this draft class so you know he’s making the roster but just how much of an impact will he make as a receiver as a rookie? If he can get the playbook and routes down he has the speed to be another huge weapon.

Dieter has been Mahomes buddy since they both arrived in Kansas City and could have an advantage of developing a connection with the QB. Byron Pringle was having a fantastic camp last year before getting hurt and then was the buzz of OTAs earlier this offseason with how good he looked.

Then you throw in a couple of promising undrafted rookies like Thompson and Curtis and you have a fantastic training camp battle on your hands.

Since we know Andy Reid will throw the ball a lot you can count on plenty of passes to go around in training camp. That means all of these young wideouts will get a chance to show that they should be the guy lining up with Hill and Watkins when the regular season rolls around. I can’t wait to watch this group compete in training camp.

Finally, the No. 1 training camp battle to watch this year.
