Three positions where the Kansas City Chiefs need guys to step up

The Kansas City Chiefs have a very talented roster but there are still three positions where they need some players to step up for a Super Bowl run.

Fear not, Kansas City Chiefs fans. Training camp is now less than two weeks away. While the offseason hype around quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been a nice change of pace, the drama around wide receiver Tyreek Hill has grown tiresome. I for one, am ready for some Chiefs updates that involve what is happening on the field, even if it is just a practice field.

After posting the AFC’s best record and losing in the AFC Championship Game to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs look like they should be one of the best teams in the NFL once again in 2019. While their overall roster is really strong I still see three clear spots where the Chiefs need some guys to step up in order to help them cement their place atop the NFL.

Before we get to those three positions, let me say that NFL teams are always looking for guys to step up at every position. There is no such thing as too much talent or too much depth at a position. Would it be great if a guy like rookie Darwin Thompson stepped up and became a weapon in the offense? Sure it would, but it isn’t needed because Damien Williams has shown he can be a productive starting running back. Would it be great if one of KC’s young wideouts like Mecole Hardman or Byron Pringle stepped up this year? Absolutely, but with guys like Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Demarcus Robinson that have already produced (at varying levels) plus Travis Kelce, it isn’t really necessary for the Chiefs young wideouts to produce yet.

I did almost include a fourth position in this post. Ultimately, I decided not to include safety on this list because I’m already completely confident that the combo of free agent addition Tyrann Mathieu and rookie second round draft pick Juan Thornhill will be a huge upgrade over last season that I don’t think it falls under the same category as these other three positions. Yes, safety play has to be better than last season but the difference is that the Chiefs made two huge additions at the position and so the question marks at that spot aren’t still lingering like they are at some other spots.

Alright, now let’s kick off the positions that did make the list with the one that is the lowest priority of the three.
