3. New-Look Interior Offensive Line
The Chiefs had an above average offensive line last season, but it was not without its issues. An interesting factoid as training camp nears is the team’s likely starting offensive interior line has never played in an NFL game together.
As it stands right now, likely starters are Andrew Wylie at left guard, Austin Reiter at center, and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif at right guard. Duvernay-Tardif suffered an injury in Week 5 of the 2018 season, and was subsequently placed on injured reserve. Reiter served as Mitch Morse‘s replacement as he dealt with a string of injuries, but the latter has since signed with the Buffalo Bills. Reiter will likely be the starter over rookie Nick Allegretti, although nothing is for certain.
Nonetheless, the battle between Reiter and Allegretti will be something to watch out for in training camp. It will be intriguing to see how it all comes together. Hopefully Mahomes and the Chiefs’ running backs will have an offensive line that will keep them protected and create holes to generate big yardage for the backs. Reid’s staff has historically done pretty well with offensive linemen, so expectations should be high.
