Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon informed the team that he would not be reporting to training camp without a new deal in place.
The Los Angeles Chargers have been a sexy pick for a lot of NFL analysts this offseason (as usual) given the talent on their roster top to bottom. From future Hall of Famer Philip Rivers under center to a wide array of weapons on offense to a stout young defense top front to back, the Chargers look ready for a Super Bowl and a showdown for the AFC West with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Unfortunately, a bit of drama has surfaced with word that star running back Melvin Gordon will not report to training camp without realizing his financial dreams.
Los Angeles running back Melvin Gordon has informed the Chargers that unless he receives a new contract, he will not report to training camp and he will demand a trade, his agent Fletcher Smith told ESPN.

Gordon enjoyed a breakout season last year for the Chargers despite missing a quarter of a season with a knee sprain. After three straight seasons to open his career with a sub 4.0 yards/carry average, Gordon averaged 5.1 yards/carry in 2018. He also added another 10 touchdowns in only 12 games, showing a strong nose for the end zone than ever. Despite the time lost, Gordon still made his second Pro Bowl in 2018 after also being voted into the game in 2016, his sophomore season in the league.
This is likely a small ripple in the AFC West pond given that the Chargers would be foolish to let Gordon walk. You can discuss doubts as to whether or not Gordon is worth top dollar, but the Chargers should be able to find a deal that works for both sides given that going with Austin Ekeler on a full-time basis devalues what he brings in spurts. This team is also ready to win now, so allowing a hole to form in the middle of the offense just doesn’t make sense with the way this club is positioned.
Gordon had 885 rushing yards on 175 carries for 10 touchdowns last season in 12 starts. He also added 50 catches for 490 receiving yards and another 4 touchdowns through the air.
