Five most exciting games on 2019 Kansas City Chiefs’ schedule
Week 1 – Jacksonville Jaguars (Away) – 9/08 @ 12:00 PM Central
From the highs of a division crown in the AFC South and the verge of victory in the 2017 AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots to the lows of last in their division and a paltry record of 5-11, the Jacksonville Jaguars and their fans have experienced a wild rollercoaster over the last two years.
What’s more, among other issues, after signing their 2014 top-draft pick and long-time starting quarterback Blake Bortles to a three-year $54 million extension just last offseason, they have already found reason to move on. Nick Foles will lineup behind center in 2019 and Bortles is now the Rams backup quarterback.
So, given all of this turmoil and turnover, why does this game make the list of top five games on the Chiefs’ schedule in 2019? In one sense, it makes the list by default. It is undeniably an exciting game because it is the first of the season.
There’s also no telling what this season’s Jaguars’ squad will accomplish. With a new and more accomplished quarterback under center and many of the pieces on defense that brought them to so close to a Super Bowl in 2017, it’s hard not to expect a sizable bounce back from this organization.
However, there is one reason and one reason alone that this game would make anyone’s list of most exciting games. That reason is Patrick Mahomes. After an explosive, jaw-dropping campaign in 2018 that culminated in the Chiefs ending inches from their first Super Bowl berth in decades, how will the new face of the NFL open his encore to a powerfully evocative MVP season?
That and that alone is the real reason this game makes the list. The Jaguars are sure to be a tougher opponent in 2019 than they were in 2018, but the real question is whether what we all witnessed in 2018 from Mahomes is what we can expect for the next 15 years. I believe it is, and can’t wait to see it continue.
Currently, the all-time series between the Chiefs and the Jaguars is tied up at 6 wins apiece. However, according to CG Technology’s betting spreads, the Chiefs have the early edge in this year’s contest and are 4-point favorites on the road.
