2019 NFL Supplemental Draft prospects fit Chiefs potential needs

The two prospects who’ve entered the NFL’s Supplemental Draft are both at places of real competitive need for the Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a great competition brewing for key spots at both wide receiver and linebacker heading into training camp, and they might be interested in adding another prospect to the mix of any of the 2019 NFL Supplemental Draft prospects stand out.

So far, two prospects have reportedly applied to be a part of the Supplemental Draft: West Virginia wide receiver Marcus Simms and Syracuse linebacker Shyheim Cullen.

There are no reports the Chiefs have individual interests in the talents involved—Simms and/or Cullen—but it’s at least interesting that they play positions that are a bit more unsettled than others on the roster.

At wide receiver, the potential suspension looming over Tyreek Hill has necessitated a heavy mental load on incoming rookie Mecole Hardman, the Chiefs second round pick at No. 56 overall in April. Chris Conley signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency, and De’Anthony Thomas is still a free agent—another player gone from last year’s roster. The Chiefs have brought in competition, but Simms presents another opportunity to add a player.

Simms is a 6’0 junior who had 46 catches for 699 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Mountaineers last season. Simms also has great experience as a kick returner (41 returns) at WVU.

As for linebacker, it’s hard to tell who will even start at this point at all three spots with any certainty in Steve Spagnuolo’s new base defense. The Chiefs have brought in a few options in addition to newer faces who were imported last season, so any interest in Cullen likely depends on how the Chiefs are viewing their current depth chart as things look through recent minicamps.

Cullen had 31 tackles last season for Syracuse, including 3 for a loss. He also had 2 passes defended and 1 sack.
