Why the Chiefs should go all in and trade for Jalen Ramsey

Ramsey is a good run defender

While being a run defender is not the primary goal of a cornerback, Ramsey’s ability to tackle in space cannot be overstated. Last season the Chiefs had struggles with their tackling ability at the second level.

While the addition of Mathieu helps alleviate some of their run-stopping issues, having another player on the back end with solid tackling skills could go a long way in stopping teams from converting on 3rd and 5 by running the football. As a bigger corner, he moves very well. In a zone scheme, this will be especially useful in stopping the run.

Final thoughts

While many are against the idea of the Chiefs trading away their first-round pick three years in a row, I believe that it is a good strategy by Brett Veach. While the draft is incredibly important to build success for the future, adding key veterans now may be the way to go for a team that is trying to win a Super Bowl in a five-year window.

While it may be an unpopular position amongst the Chiefs fanbase, I would trade a first round pick for Ramsey in a heartbeat. This could eat up the rest of the available salary cap after the team re-signs Chris Jones. While Ramsey will not come cheaply in terms of money or draft capital, a player of his caliber should always be on the Chiefs radar.
