October 7, 1991 – Chiefs vs. Bills

In a clash between two AFC playoff contenders, the Chiefs defense crushed the Bills offense, holding them to just two second-quarter field goals in a game against the eventual AFC Champions. The ugly final (for Bufalo) was a 33-6 loss in Arrowhead Stadium.

This was not a day that Jim Kelly prefers to remember, I’m sure, with only 189 yards passing, no touchdowns, and 6 sacks. The Bills also coughed up five fumbles (and lost all of them); a rough day for any quarterback no doubt.

K.C. was content to pound the rock all day. They threw for only 150 yards but had both Christian Okoye and Harvey Williams over the century mark on the ground. Nick “The Kick” Lowry put four field goals through the uprights.

But the defense. The early ’90s defense was so special to watch. Thomas forced multiple fumbles on the day, and led the pass rush with four sacks of the future Hall of Famer in Kelly.

Unfortunately, the team used all of its mojo against the Bills in this one. This preview of the postseason matchup had to have the Chiefs feeling pretty good when they rolled in to Buffalo in January for the Divisional Round. Unfortunately, the Jim Kelly led Bills adapted to both sides of the Chiefs attack, and returned the favor to K.C. in a 37-14 playoff blowout.
