October 3, 1993 – Chiefs vs. Raiders

The 1993 Chiefs were so good that this game stands out as one of Derrick Thomas’ top 10, and he wasn’t the best defensive player on the field for Kansas City that day.

An early season rivalry game saw the Chiefs hosting the arch nemesis LA Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium. Early in the season, many thought the two may be equals. By game’s end, it was clear that was not the case. Kansas City controlled the game from the kickoff and won 24-9.

There were multiple storylines in the game including Dave Krieg relieving an injured Joe Montana; and a defense which not only held the helpless Raiders under 10 points, but also sacked quarterback Vince Evans (who?) six times.

Neil Smith led the Chiefs pass rush with four takedowns of the beleaguered QB in the game; but Derrick Thomas had a significant impact two, notching 2 sacks in the context. But what stands out is everything else DT did: three solo tackles, a blocked kick, and a forced fumble. Thomas was simply all over the field in this one, making it an easy selection for this top 10 list.
