December 27th, 1992 – Chiefs vs. Broncos

Derrick Thomas put up monstrous numbers against the Broncos throughout his career, including three other multi-sack games over the course of his first four seasons. But it wasn’t until his 8th game against John Elway that he finally notched a performance worthy of this top 10 list. On December 27th, 1992, Thomas had a performance for the record books.

The Chiefs entered the game on the hunt for the AFC West title, as did the Broncos. Denver entered with a paltry 1-6 record on the road, but Kansas City had a head coach with a 1-9 record against the Elway-led Broncos in his career (between Kansas City and Cleveland). Marty’s struggles against Elway led him to say “I think John Elway has a little Marty Schottenheimer doll that he sticks pins in.”

But Derrick was not letting this one slip away. Kansas City exorcised some demons against Denver, pounding them 42-20 in what some have called one of the greatest games in Chiefs history. Thomas recorded three sacks in the game, and added a fumble recovery and a fourth quarter strip sack touchdown that put the game out of reach for good.

I love watching DT play football. (Do yourself a favor and check the 1:52:00 mark.)
