4. Kansas City Chiefs, 2003, The Greatest Show

The 2003 Chiefs were one of the most entertaining offenses ever assembled. Dick Vermeil and Trent Green led this team to becoming a nearly unstoppable force and amassed over 6,000 yards of offense and 56 touchdowns. Couple that offense with the most electrifying kick returner in league history (at least at the time) in Dante Hall, and this team was really something special.

Trent Green started all 16 games for the team, though backup Todd Collins did find his way in to five games due to several blowouts. Green’s 24-12 touchdown-to-interception ratio and 4,000 yards was good enough for a Pro Bowl nod. The rest of the the offense featured Pro Bowlers Priest Holmes (27 touchdowns) and Tony Gonzalez, both of whom were also first team All-Pro selections; and one of the most dominant offensive lines ever assembled featuring Hall of Famers Willie Roaf and Will Shields. Al Saunders did a masterful job of leading this offense up and down the field.

The defense was, well…not the worst in team history? They did allow a whole mess of points throughout the season, but that just meant we got to see more offense! Somehow Jerome Woods and Gary Stills were named to the Pro Bowl, but this defense was not good.

And that would prove to be the Achilles’ Heel for the team. Despite a number one seed in the AFC playoffs, the Chiefs lost to the Indianapolis Colts in the Divisional Round 38-31—the no punt game.

Despite the playoff exit, the 2003 team was definitively one of the top in team history.
