6. Kansas City Chiefs, 2015, The Long, Cold Wait

2015 makes the list for three primary reasons. The first is that it represents one of the single best seasons in Alex Smith‘s pretty good NFL career. Smith completed 65% of his passes that year and threw only seven interceptions, while also starting all 16 games for the team. Smith added an incredible 498 yards with a 5.9 yard per carry average.

The second reason 2015 makes the list is because it represented the first playoff victory for the franchise in 22 years—a victory that the fan base waited for and wanted as much as any other victory in team history. In crushing the Houston Texans 30-0, on the road, Alex Smith cemented his place in Chiefs history and proved that he was a great starting quarterback.

The third reason is the way that head coach Andy Reid was able to turn the team around after a dismal start to the year. After winning in week one, the Chiefs rattled off five consecutive losses in games that they were mostly not very competitive in. After that, the team won 11 consecutive games (including the Wild Card game) in what has to be considered one of the most incredible turnarounds in league history. The 11 game win streak is the longest in team history.

While this is one of the few Chiefs teams on the list that did not win the AFC West Championship; the fact that this is the team that broke the playoff curse is either cruel irony or deeply fitting for Kansas City.
