Will Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs regress this season?
Peyton Manning – Denver Broncos – 2013
Peyton Manning was already one of the most prolific quarterbacks in NFL history when he came to the Denver Broncos late in his career. While most people expected Manning to have a few more good seasons left in the tank I don’t know that anyone would have predicted that he’d have the most prolific season of any quarterback ever in the history of the league at that point in his career, but that’s exactly what he did in 2013.
Here’s what Manning and the Broncos did in 2013 and then the following season.
2013: 68.3% completions, 5,477 passing yards, 342.3 yards/game, 8.3 yards/attempt, 55 TDs, 10 INTs, 115.1 QB rating, 13-3 record, 2-1 playoff record (lost in Super Bowl)
2014: 66.2% completions, 4,727 passing yards, 295.4 yards/game, 7.9 yards/attempt, 39 TDs, 15 INTs, 101.5 QB rating, 12-4 record, 0-1 playoff record (lost in divisional round)
Look, if we’re being honest, Manning still had a heck of a season in 2014 considering his age at the time, but it was still a significant statistical drop off from his record setting 2013. The Broncos also didn’t do quite as well as a team either. Despite losing just one more regular season game than 2013, they weren’t able to repeat their postseason success and were one and done in the playoffs. They were able to come back the next year and win the Super Bowl but by that point Manning’s numbers had taken an even bigger drop as he became more of a game manager that relied on his defense to win games.
Finally, the most recent entry on the list.
