Dakari Monroe, a rookie free agent cornerback who was with the Kansas City Chiefs during rookie minicamp has been brought back.

The Kansas City Chiefs will get a chance to see a bit more of rookie free agent cornerback Dakari Monroe after he came back to the team after joining them for rookie minicamp earlier this month. Monroe will fill the roster spot opened by the retirement of veteran linebacker Martrell Spaight.

The Chiefs initially released Monroe earlier this month in a series of moves that brought in new competitors in the secondary from Florida Atlantic: Herb Miller and Andrew Soroh. Monroe will now get a second chance to show the Chiefs staff what he can do after an initial weekend with the team that clearly left them on the fence.

Monroe is a San Jose, California native who stayed home to play his college ball at San Jose State. Monroe started 22 of 46 games at the collegiate level including all 12 games last year. He had 15 pass breakups in 2018 and had 4 interceptions as well, showing a real knack for making plays on the ball. Was also the gunner on special teams which could give him a leg up on some of the others who aren’t used to playing there.

At 5’11, 191 lbs., Monroe will be competing this spring and summer with plenty of other hopefuls to earn one of the last roster spots as cornerback depth and special teams contributors. Monroe’s primary competition will come from the aforementioned duo of Miller and Soroh along with Mark Fields, D’Montre Wade, Jalin Burrell, sixth round pick Rashad Fenton, and free agent signing Keith Reaser. Last year’s sixth round pick Tremon Smith could be included in this group as well.
