Round 7, Pick 216

Priority #1: Take the best athlete available

It’s the seventh round, so you’re scouring the bottom of the proverbial barrel for talent. Set aside production and positions, focus on athletic profiles and give your coaches raw material to work with.

Priority #2: Finish Strong

It’s late in the draft, but that doesn’t mean this is a throwaway pick. Find a guy who has a chance to stick around for a while, even if that means the practice squad.

Primary Targets

Marquis Young, RB, Massachusetts

Young had a strong showing at the UMass pro day and represents good value at this point in the draft. Young may seem like just another name at running back, but he has some pop when you turn on the film and if you squint just right, you can see the potential for an NFL player. The Chiefs met with Young at his pro day.

Reshad Fenton, CB, South Carolina

Fenton satisfies athletic thresholds for the NFL, but not much beyond that. Fenton’s game is much more cerebral and he flashes above-average instincts. Plays his best with the ball in front of him and will get roasted by burners, but could be a spot starter in a pinch. Fenton offers special teams value as well. The Chiefs met with Fenton at the East-West Shrine game.

Honorable Mention:

  • Derrick Baity, CB, Kentucky
  • Jalin Burrell, CB, New Mexico State
  • Dontavius Russell, DT, Auburn
