Round 2, Pick 61

Priority #1: Find a defender with plus upside

The Chiefs have a lot of work to do on the defensive side of the ball, but at this point in the NFL Draft, the most established players will be long gone. Fortunately for Kansas City, there are a plethora of players who offer upside as developmental talents.

Priority #2: Catch a falling star

Crazy things happen in the NFL Draft, and there are usually some players who see their draft stock plummet over the draft weekend. The Chiefs, sitting with an additional second round pick at #63 overall, can roll the dice on a player with extra talent and extra questions, regardless of position.

Priority #3: Get on the phone, talk trade

The Chiefs are without a fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and could benefit from trying to get a pick back in that range. This is probably a bit early for the Chiefs to be making such a move, but teams can offer up a decent haul for picks at the end of the second round, especially if an interesting player is falling down draft boards.

Primary Targets

Nasir Adderley, S, Delaware

Adderley falling this far would be a bit of a surprise, but not entirely implausible. Adderley had a lot of hype in the draft community toward the end of the season, but that hype has worn down. Adderley is a true single-high safety who would add a component to the Chiefs defense that has long been lacking. There will be questions about the level of competition and overall athleticism for Adderley, but he has the production to warrant consideration here. It does not hurt that Adderley is a Delaware Blue Hen, just like Chiefs general manager Brett Veach. The Chiefs met with Adderley at the Senior Bowl.

JoeJuan Williams, CB, Vanderbilt

JoeJuan Williams was receiving first-round buzz before disappointing at the NFL combine with a 4.64 40 time. Williams is as raw as a corner prospect as you will find in this class, but he has the size that is missing in the Kansas City secondary at 6’4 and 212 pounds. Williams looks fast enough on tape and has an extremely competitive demeanor. Williams may not be able to match up with top end speed guys in the NFL but should hold his own against bigger framed receivers which the Chiefs have struggled to defend against in recent years. The Chiefs met with Williams at the Combine and brought him in for a private workout.

Charles Omenihu, DL, Texas

Charles Omenihu is personally one of my favorite prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft. Omenihu is a power rusher with excellent size and handles offensive lineman at the point of attack. The Texas Longhorn has seen his stock take a hit as he battles the label of “tweener”. Omenihu’s ability to play at defensive end and tackle is a bit of a double-edged sword. Omenihu would be good value at this point in the NFL Draft, and Steve Spagnuolo should be able to maximize his skill set. The Chiefs met with Omenihu at the Combine and brought him in for a private workout.

Honorable Mention

  • Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama
  • Jaylon Ferguson, DE, Louisiana Tech
  • L.J. Collier, DE, Texas Christian
  • Miles Sanders, RB, Penn State
