The case for moving up for Byron Murphy

Overview

Many believe that Byron Murphy edges out Greedy Williams for the best cornerback in the draft class. As a physical cornerback, Murphy not only provides good coverage on the back half of the field, but he is also a willing tackler who is effective against the run. Murphy is my highest rated defensive back in the class. In his collegiate career, he finished with 6 interceptions and a opposing passer rating of 54.1.

Fit with the Chiefs

The Chiefs will be in the market for any defensive back talent they can find. With the possibility of Murphy dropping out of the top 12, the Chiefs would be wise to move up for him. With Bashaud Breeland, Charvarius Ward and Kendall Fuller at cornerback, Murphy would provide the true number one cornerback status for the team.

While Murphy’s athleticism does not jump off the charts, his playmaking and lockdown ability would make him incredibly valuable to Steve Spagnuolo and the Chiefs. With the emphasis on blitzes and stunts, Kansas City will need someone on the back end to make plays on the ball. There is no better all-around cornerback in this class.

What it would take for the Chiefs to acquire Byron Murphy

Even with Murphy as the number one corner, many are projecting him to be available in the range of pick 20 to 27. I believe that he is talented enough to go in the top 15, but if he does somehow fall to this range, the Chiefs should definitely move up and make this pick. Especially if it would mean sacrificing just picks 29 and their third round pick.
