Terrance West – Running Back

The Chiefs don’t necessarily need a running back. But, you could have said the same last offseason before they went into offseason workouts with six. Plus, there have been several mock drafts projecting the Chiefs to use one of their top 100 picks on a running back. So, there seems to be some sentiment around the league that the Chiefs are still looking to add to their backfield.

Enter FA running back Terrance West. He hasn’t had a particularly spectacular career, but this would likely make him a cheap addition. What’s more, he has at least demonstrated some ability that could make him a good fit for the Chiefs offense.

Particularly, in 2016 he had over 1,000 yards from scrimmage from 227 touches. The talent is there. Once again, like the other players on this list, I think West could see a bump from playing with Patrick Mahomes in the Chiefs’ offensive scheme. If nothing else, he’d be a cheap add that would give the Chiefs draft flexibility and push competition in camp and the preseason.

Conclusion:

At this point in free agency, there are relatively few options. Most players who are left could only serve as depth options for teams. Obviously, the Chiefs won’t be looking to sign all of these positions. They likely don’t need to, but signing one or even two of these positions would give them great flexibility in the upcoming draft.

Now none of these players would likely come in and make a huge impact on the roster, but they also wouldn’t be expected to do that. Why these players are intriguing is they’ve all had a modicum of success in their career. Nothing spectacular, but the talent is there. One of the keys to being a successful GM is having the ability to identify players who haven’t fit elsewhere that can fit on your team.
