Dax Raymond – Utah State

If you read my piece on running back prospects that I did last month you might remember that one of my favorite running backs in this class is Darwin Thompson of Utah State. Surprisingly, he’s not the only offensive weapon from Utah State that I’d like to see the Chiefs target in this draft. Tight end Dax Raymond is also a promising prospect in his own right.

Raymond isn’t the best prospect on this list at any one thing, but he’s also not the worst at any of them either. He has decent size at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds but isn’t quite as big as some of the others. He ran pretty well at the combine but his 4.73 forty time isn’t quite as fast as some of the other top tight ends. He’s a solid route runner and hands catcher but not quite on the level of a Jace Sternberger. He’s a decent blocker but isn’t as good as someone like Foster Moreau.

Basically, Raymond might not be as flashy as the other tight ends I’ve listed so far, but he does everything pretty well and will likely be available after most of the others have gone off the board. I still believe he could contribute for the Chiefs as a second tight end as a rookie and could make some plays in the passing game while the Chiefs try to develop his run blocking.

Here’s a clip from practice where Raymond jukes his defender and tracks the deep pass over his shoulder to make the grab.

While I don’t think Raymond has quite as much upside as some of the other names on this list I do think he is a dependable option for Day 3 that could upgrade the second tight end spot for K.C.

Finally, a late round sleeper pick.
