Kahale Warring – San Diego State

San Diego State’s Kahale Warring is one of the most intriguing tight end prospects in this draft class. Warring does not have a lot of experience in football. He only played football for his senior season of high school as he was a multi-sport athlete that played water polo, basketball, and track. He then worked his way up from a walk on at San Diego State to one of their top pass catching weapons his senior year.

As his multi-sport history suggests, Warring is a great all-around athlete. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.67 seconds at the combine. His big 6-foot-5 and 252 pound frame makes him a mismatch against most defenders. While he is still incredibly raw, he has shown the power needed to be a successful NFL blocker and the hands to reach out and pluck a pass out of the air.

Here’s a clip of Warring boxing out a smaller defender and going up to snag the touchdown catch.

Warring’s routes still need work as he continues to learn the game, and his blocking technique needs some coaching too, but I’m guessing some NFL team will think his upside is well worth it and will put their faith in NFL coaches to bring out his potential.

I should also warn Chiefs fans that Warring’s tape as a pass catcher is inconsistent. While he has shown the ability to make a really nice snag out of mid-air, he has also dropped some very catchable passes as well. While Warring’s upside is very tempting I could understand why some fans would be wary of an athletically gifted tight end with a history in sports other than football who has shown upside but also dropped some passes. I still think he’d be well worth drafting in the early-to-middle rounds of the draft.

Next up a promising mid round tight end.
