Spencer Ware

Spencer Ware was a surprise for most Chiefs’ fans, and probably the organization as well. A former sixth round pick by the Seattle Seahawks and practice squad player for the Chiefs, Ware didn’t enter the NFL with much momentum. But opportunity came knocking when All Pro running back and Chiefs’ starter Jamaal Charles went down with injury in 2015.

Ware was eventually activated in week 8 and finished the season with 403 yards and six touchdowns. He even had one of the most punishing runs in recent memory at the end of the playoff game against the Houston Texans, en route to a 30-0 drubbing and the team’s first playoff win in 22 years.

He followed this up with an impressive 2016 campaign where he was the undisputed starter. He rushed for 921 yards, at 4.3 yards per carry, and three touchdowns. Unfortunately for Ware, this would be the end of his major success with the franchise. He tore his PCL and MCL in the preseason in 2017 and never really regained form.

But all in all, of the seasons that Ware was healthy for, he was a productive back. The problem with running backs is they’re a dime a dozen. Especially given his injury history, it’s unlikely a team will take any kind of major risk to sign him. Similarly to Berry, I think Ware will get a one-year offer by a team that needs to fill a spot following the draft.
