The Kansas City Chiefs brought in a local product in Kansas State running back Alex Barnes for a pre-draft private workout at Arrowhead.

The Kansas City Chiefs recently held a private workout with NFL hopeful Alex Barnes, per reporter Aaron Wilson.

Wilson noted on Thursday that Barnes, a running back out of Kansas State, had drew the Chiefs attention for a visit to Arrowhead, a nice development that could mean big things for a regional product.

Barnes weighed in at the NFL Combine at 6’0, 226 lbs. and set high marks with his incredible 34 reps on the bench press. This past season, he was named second team All-Big 12 after a performance in which he put up 1,355 rushing yards on only 256 carries and 12 touchdowns. He averaged 5.3 yards/carry while being the focal point for opposing defenses.

Barnes could be a nice powerful addition to the Chiefs backfield if they wanted to add a prospect to the mix without using one of their early picks to do so. The Chiefs are often tied to the better running backs in the draft in mocks—from Josh Jacobs of Alabama to David Montgomery of Iowa to Devin Singletary of Florida Atlantic—but with several defensive needs, Barnes could be a better overall addition.

As of now, the Chiefs have already added Carlos Hyde in free agency to replace Spencer Ware, giving head coach Andy Reid a backfield of Hyde, Damien Williams and Darrel Williams to work with. After this year, however, Hyde will be a free agent again and Williams will be in his last year. There’s definitely room for one more player, at least.

Barnes is a native of Coffeyville, Kansas, about three hours south of Kansas City.
