2019 NFL Draft: Lonnie Johnson to visit Kansas City Chiefs
By Matt Conner
Lonnie Johnson, a cornerback out of the University of Kentucky, is the latest draft prospect to hold a forthcoming visit with the Chiefs.
The Kansas City Chiefs continue to hold private workouts for a number of the 2019 NFL Draft’s most heralded cornerbacks with the news that Lonnie Johnson, a prospect out of the University of Kentucky, will be visiting Arrowhead Stadium soon.
The Chiefs are hardly the only team taking a closer look at Johnson. Josh Edwards, a reporter for Kentucky football, says several others are also hosting the cornerback for a private workout and personal visit, including the New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Atlanta Falcons.
Johnson has nice length for the role, and his size (at 6’2, 213 pounds) would play well for how physical Steve Spagnuolo wants his corners to be. The early entrant believes he’ll be taken in the first round based on what he’s heard, but that’s true for most good to great draft hopefuls at this point.
The Chiefs have Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland locked in as the likely outside starters at cornerback heading into the 2019 season for now. Charvarius Ward and Tremon Smith are also available as younger prospects hoping for more playing time in 2019. That’s a barren cupboard overall in need of an infusion of young talent, and Johnson would certainly fit the bill. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see the Chiefs bring in more than one player from the draft at the position.
Johnson had 23 tackles, 4 passes defended, and 1 interception last year for the Wildcats.
