Jason Verrett will skip Chiefs visit after signing with 49ers
By Matt Conner
The fact that Jason Verrett has signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers means that his scheduled visit with the Chiefs is not happening.
It looks like Jason Verrett won’t be making that free agent visit to Kansas City after all. Instead, the San Francisco 49ers announced they’d reached a one-year agreement worth $3.6 million with Verrett during his visit on Wednesday.
Verrett was a free agent cornerback on a whirlwind tour to three interested parties of which the Chiefs were the last. The Houston Texans were reportedly interested and next on his visit list, but the Niners never let him leave and gained a nice buy-low option in the secondary because of it.
Verrett entered the NFL with the San Diego Chargers as the team’s first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. However, Verrett never played a full season except for 2015, and even then he only started 14 games on the year. From a torn rotator cuff to a torn ACL to a torn Achilles tendon, Verrett has suffered numerous injuries since entering the NFL, hence the reason that a player with the skills to make the Pro Bowl in his only healthy season signs for such a small amount.
Stil,l if Verrett is healthy, he’s a lockdown corner with a chip on his shoulder to make up for lost time. He’s been cursed with bad luck since injuring the NFL and it’s hard not to feel bad for such an obviously talented player.
The Chiefs were hoping to spend some time with Verrett, but right now they are at least still hosting Ronald Darby on a free agent visit in the hopes of signing at least one corner in this open market.
