The endless rumors that linked Landon Collins and the Kansas City Chiefs turned out to be for nothing given the six-year deal given to him by the Redskins.
Landon Collins didn’t take long to find a new home in free agency. Despite weeks of rumors linking him to the Kansas City Chiefs however, the free agent safety instead decided to remain in the NFC East with the Washington Redskins.
The former New York Giants safety had been linked to K.C. for most of the offseason given that the Chiefs new defensive coordinator is his former coach in Steve Spagnuolo. The Chiefs also have serious needs at safety given the uncertain status of Eric Berry and the general lack of top-tier talent on the depth chart.
The biggest question mark around Collins was expected to be whether or not the Giants would tag him. When general manager Dave Gettleman decided to let him go, the Chiefs were often mentioned as a potential new home, but no one could have predicted the Washington Redskins would outbid everyone for his services with an incredible deal that reaches six years in length.
Given the Chiefs salary cap constraints and the money already allocated for Eric Berry on the books, the idea that the team could even compete with this sort of offer is silly. Clearly the Chiefs were not nearly as “in it” as expected unless Washington decided to irresponsibly overbid against itself for the sake of adding secondary help.
The Chiefs are still rumored to be interested in Tyrann Mathieu and a number of quality safeties are available in free agency despite the loss of Collins.
