3. Running Back

While some Chiefs fans might have argued that this entire list should be made up of defensive players, the fact of the matter is that the Chiefs currently have enough defensive linemen, linebackers, and safeties to put together a starting defense right now. You might not love every starter, but at least they have guys with significant starting experience at all those spots. Running back is another story.

The Chiefs signed Damien Williams to an extension at the end of last season. That contract was clearly a commitment to Williams going into 2019. It’s probably safe to assume Williams will at least start the season as the Chiefs primary running back but behind him there simply isn’t much left on the roster.

I’m a fan of Darrel Williams who was an undrafted free agent last season but having him as the only depth behind Damien Williams is not near enough. Perhaps Darrel can win the second running back spot but the Chiefs have to add a third option that they believe could contribute at running back this season in case of injury or if either Williams should struggle in 2019.

The 2019 running back class could have some intriguing options in the mid rounds that the Chiefs could consider. The offense is a definite strength of the Chiefs team but they need to ensure that the running back position is properly stocked with talent to free up Patrick Mahomes and the passing attack. Look for the Chiefs to add a possible starting caliber player at this position.

Next up, one more need on offense.
