The San Antonio Commanders of the AAF have signed former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Stefan Charles.

For those of you watching the Alliance of American Football in the preseason void after the Super Bowl, fans of the Kansas City Chiefs will recognize a familiar name who recently signed with the San Antonio Commanders. The AAF franchise recently inked former Chiefs defensive lineman Stefan Charles to a contract.

Charles is quite the journeyman at this point, having spent individual stints with the Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Chiefs before signing with the AAF’s Commanders. Even with the Chiefs he was released and then signed again just last year, comprising most of the offseason with the Chiefs. When final roster cuts were due, Charles was once again let go.

At 6’5, 320 plus pounds, Charles clearly doesn’t have a problem getting looks for his size and strength. He’s appeared in 49 games in his NFL career, including 2 starts, but he hasn’t played an official down in the NFL since the 2016 season with the Lions.

Charles failed to latch on with the Chiefs last season given the depth along the defensive front. Not only did the team grab Derrick Nnadi in the 2018 NFL Draft, but they also signed Xavier Williams to team up front with Chris Jones and Allen Bailey. Justin Hamilton was also a developmental body who grew into a rotational contributor. Given the overall choice, the Chiefs were forced to part ways with not only Charles but others like Rakeem Nunez-Roches.
