Will Shields inducted into Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame
By Matt Conner
Former Kansas City Chiefs lineman Will Shields has no shortage of lifetime achievements under his belt, and the latest is the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
During his football career at any level, there’s no question that Will Shields was a man among boys. Even at the professional level, Shields was an immovable object along the Kansas City Chiefs offensive front and the same was definitely true at every other level.
Given his tremendous football career, Shields has been inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame for 2019. He’s part of a class that also includes longtime Sooners coach Bob Stoops, Olympic wrestler Kendall Cross, baseball players Mike Moore and Mickey Tettleton, basketball coach Lou Henson and softball coach Patty Gasso.
It’s interesting that the state has taken so long to honor one of their own, a player who was born in Fort Riley, Kansas but attended Lawton High School in Lawton, Oklahoma and played so well for the Wolverines that he earned a scholarship to the University of Nebraska. Shields has been a member of the College Football Hall of Fame since 2011 and the Professional Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio since 2015.
Shields entered the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs as their third round selection in the 1993 NFL Draft. Shields went on to start 223 games at the highest level and was a 12-time Pro Bowler in his career. Perhaps most importantly, he was named Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2003. He made three first-team All Pro rosters, the NFL’s All-Decade team of the 2000s and is also a member of the Chiefs Hall of Fame as well.
The class will officially be introduced on February 19th.
